‘Another World’ aka ‘Out of this World’ – DOS Nostalgia #6

By

0 Another World aka Out of this World DOS Nostalgia #6A creation of Eric Chahi (who did everything but the music for the game), Another World is a game that aged exceptionally well. No HUD, no speech, no useless text, just the good old visual storytelling in this groundbreaking action adventure. Be prepared to die a lot and then cry for more when the game is over.

If you don’t own this game already get the the 15th anniversary edition here:

http://www.anotherworld.fr/anotherworld_uk/

It features slightly updated graphics, high resolution support and is even more balanced then the PC DOS version (which used to be the definitive one). It’s only $9 people! Less than two Burger King meals.

Not many people know that the game had a ‘sequel’ of sorts, ‘Heart of the Alien’ which was released on Sega CD only. Eric Chahi wasn’t directly involved apart from approving some concepts. The game is not as good as ‘Another World’ and is quite frustrating, but it has a great intro showing your alien buddy and what he was doing when you were separated in the original game. It’s worth checking out if you’re a fan of the original.

UPDATE:
I was reminded that Eric Chai developed one more game after AW, and that was ‘Heart of Darkness’ for Windows and PSX. Moby Games page here:

The game is very similar to ‘Another World’ and looks like it should have been released in ’92. But even in 320×240 resolution the spite animations are fantastic and the overall game design is superb.

@decanos78 Thank you. I’m aware of Flashback and own several versions of it. What I meant to say is I’ve heard from some people that Prince of Persia delivers its limited story during the gameplay much like Another World, and I don’t quite agree with that. As far as animation process – that’s what rotoscoping is – tracing the video. Both Chahi and Mechner traced video footage of their tv sets. In Mortal Kombat video stills themselves were digitized.

OMG! lol i remember wen this came out on the SNES, wot an awesome game, if you like this game you’ll definatly like: FLASHBACK: THE QUEST FOR IDENTITY, same type of game, graphics, movement, but ALOT bigger and harder ^^ check it out ^^
I will say, u comment that people class this like prince of persia, that’s only in the way the movement of the character moves and his actions, they used a real person in a suit to get the animations , kinda like how they done the players in mortal combat.

Those graphics were awesome for 1991. I thought it must have been from around the 1996 sort of time they look that good.

This is a great game, as is prince of persia, though I find Flashback to be my game of choice for this type of game.

I was like 7 years old. The ending is very emotional. It’s not like I’m one of those gay teenagers who cried at FFVII.

First played this within a year of it coming out, on my uncle’s new computer with a great Sound Blaster sound system. Blew me away, and still does – one of the best DOS games, one of the best games period.

I first played this on a 386 with a PC speaker back in 1992. It was so challenging that I got stuck and never finished.
And now I have an emulator for the SegaMegaDrive on a Pentium3 laptop, and I still got stuck.
Nonetheless, I’ll keep coming back when i’m in the mood.

Sorry I forgot about the description, I got distracted by the first comment.
I didn’t like the AW ending that much, it made no satisfactory conclusion or explanation to me, but yeah, the first HotA part was great :) I remembered it when I played Half-life: Blue Shift.

  19. dosnostalgic says:

    I did mention HotA …
I did mention HotA in the description. I actually think that the ending of AW is quite good. I remember almost crying the first time I saw it. The music is forever stuck in my head. I’ve come to live with the ending of HotA just because I’ve seen it SO many times by now, but of course the first time I saw it I was furious.I have to say that the best part of HotA is by far the intro that shows your buddy’s side of the story and establishes most gameplay elements like the whip, bad guys, etc.

    Civilization and …
    Civilization and Nebulus!

Yeah, Another World rocked every bit of every byte. I couldn’t agree with you more on pretty much everything you said. All the ways you could die… It might have been interesting though to mention the actual sequel Another World: Heart of the Alien that despite having some good ideas and/or improvements pretty much butchered the first game. The ending of that game sucked way more than that of this one…
